ODDO BHF and HEC Paris create a Chair dedicated to Financial Analysis

ODDO BHF3 Minutes

Paris, September 18, 2018

ODDO BHF, renowned for the quality of its financial analysis, has teamed up with HEC Paris to create a “Financial Analysis” teaching Chair.

The purpose of this Chair is to educate HEC Paris students in corporate financial analysis methodologies, from valuation to formulating recommendations. Its holder will work alongside teams from ODDO BHF.

Academic responsibility for this Chair has been entrusted to Alexei Ovtchinnikov, Associate Professor of Finance at HEC Paris, who is also a member of the CNRS-GREGHEC Research Laboratory and Academic Director of the Master in Finance (ranked first in the world by the Financial Times).

Financial analysis has long been integral to ODDO BHF, and its influence extends to the group’s other business lines: asset management, corporates and markets and private wealth management. Financial analysts often gravitate towards other industries within the institution such as asset management or corporate finance. These links are particularly important for ODDO BHF because they reinforce the sectoral approach of corporate finance, while also assisting in the development of new fund managers. In 2018, ODDO BHF earned first place in the EXTEL French securities ranking for the third consecutive year, and first place in the 2018 Euromoney poll in high yield. By merging with Natixis in France for its activities of research and equity brokerage, ODDO BHF confirmed its ambition to increase its standing in France and to be one of the top three brokers in Germany. The team at ODDO BHF looks after 600 securities, including 220 in France and 130 in Germany, which constitutes more than 80% of the major reference indices in France and Germany.

The current teams at ODDO BHF include roughly twenty HEC alumni, and ODDO BHF supervisory board includes Bernard Ramanantsoa, Dean Emeritus of HEC Paris.

Philippe Oddo, Managing Partner of ODDO BHF:

“We are pleased to create a chair with HEC which meets two of our ambitions: to continue to grow this business, which remains key to understanding the financial markets, and to recruit 100 young talents in France and Germany.”

For Peter Todd, Dean of HEC Paris,

“finance has always been one of the top fields at HEC Paris, both from a research perspective and in terms of our teaching programs. Today, 28 % of our students choose a career in finance. Thanks to the Financial Analysis Chair, we will be able to enrich their education with the expertise of our partner ODDO BHF and improve the already excellent caliber of our teaching. I am convinced that, under the guidance of the Chairholder, Professor Alexei Ovtchinnikov, our Finance courses will enhance their status as the best in the world. Finally, I wish to emphasize how proud I am to be forming this partnership with a German company. It will strengthen the extremely close links between HEC Paris and Germany, certainly on an academic level, but also on a corporate one.”

According to the UT Dallas finance research ranking, the finance department at HEC Paris is ranked third in Europe. Since 2010, the research faculty has published more than 40 papers in the top three finance and top five economics academic journals. The members of the finance department cover a wide range of fields, including corporate finance, asset pricing, asset management, risk management, banking, or the regulation and organizations of financial markets. This Chair offers a perfect opportunity for HEC to develop its research in financial analysis.

About ODDO BHF

ODDO BHF is an independent Franco-German financial services group, with a history stretching back over 160 years. It was created from the alliance of a French family-owned business built up by five generations of stockbrokers and a German bank specialising in Mittelstand companies. With 2,300 employees (1,300 in Germany and 1,000 in France and Tunisia), and more than 100 billion euros in assets under management, ODDO BHF operates in three main businesses, based on significant investment in market expertise: private banking, asset management and corporate and investment banking. The Group has a specific ownership structure as 60% of its capital is held by the Oddo family and 30% by employees. This “partnership” ethos guarantees the long-term involvement of its teams. Equities remain unmatched over the long term

Three British economists—Paul Marsh and Mike Staunton of the London Business School, and Elroy Dimson from Cambridge University—have embarked on a meticulous endeavour: they have traced 35 stock markets around the world as far back as possible to test a core theoretical question of investment. Are equities truly superior to all other asset classes over the long term?

The moment of truth for public debt Economic Perspective 4/18/2024

The moment of truth for public debt

Economic crises leave a legacy of high public debt. Expansion phases should be used as an opportunity by governments to reduce their debt and rebuild some headroom in their public finances. This is easier said than done. Let’s look at what happened after the last two major crises.

The end of the American dream? Market Outlook 4/13/2024

The end of the American dream?

We must confess that we have a strategic "bias" in favor of the US market. The past 15 years proves us quite right. Since the end of the 2007-2008 Financial Crisis, Europe has outperformed for only 27 months, or just over 2 years. This structural outperformance of the US vs. Europe is mainly explained by a more robust EPS dynamic in the US.
